Let's hope this outing with the caravan doesn't end up with a pile of snow and a return trip to collect the caravan.
We stayed on the caravan site at Redbridge. In the vicinity is also one of Oxford park and rides which we used everyday especially when we have our free bus passes.
Here's Sue are on the first afternoon, the sun's out so all is well.
On our first walk along the canal we found out what happens to boats that tie up to No Mooring buoys - they sink them. Talking about parking, it's not a good idea to take your car into Oxford - parking is very difficult and even on the outskirts permits are required!
The last lock on the Oxford canal before the River Thames.
The circular dome and drum of the Radcliffe Camera is one of the most distinctive landmarks in the city. The camera (the word means simply "room") was built 1737-1749 with £40,000 bequeathed by Dr John Radcliffe, the royal physician.
All Souls College is the ultimate of Oxford colleges. The brightest of the bright go here and it’s full of weird and quirky traditions. Few people, Oxford students included, have set foot inside the famous library and receiving a fellowship here is one of the highest academic accolades a bearded student could aim for.
Bridge of Sighs
River Thames or Isis
Natural History Museum just before Red Nose day.
One of the hands on items. Unfortunately I forgot to make a note of what these crystals are. Impressive though!
This is a section of the A40 which is being demolished. It is being taken down piecemeal so when I suggested to one of the workmen that blowing it up 'Blaster Bates style' would be quicker, he was not impressed. At the time we were walking along the Oxford Canal and had to take this detour.
Here I am at an Earthcache. There is no box to find, but there is a geographical feature.
The cliff has exposures of Upper Jurassic rock, laid down about 160 million years ago. There are many fragments of coral and fossils including sea urchins, and this pit is thought to have been a former boundary between a coral reef and the surrounding shallow sea.
This caused quite a stir when it was first installed some time ago. The house looks as though it has just been refurbished, so now is the time to snap it up!
Spot the Antony Gormley. We had walked past this a few times and not noticed this statue, to be honest I don't think anyone else has seen it. We read about it and then set about finding it.
Sue on the Mathematical Bridge Iffley. The main members of each rib are set at tangents to the circle describing the underside arch of the bridge.
Resting close to the bridge.
On our last afternoon in Oxford we visited Christchurch College.
Tom Tower.
Sue in the dining room where they filmed part of one of the Harry Potter films
Tom Quad with one of the college porters.
A rather large sundial at Christchurch.
Education at Christchurch College.
We stayed for 13 days on the campsite at Oxford and used the car 3 times and the buses everyday. the weather throughout was very good, but a little chilly at night.
